Some black & white landscape shots from our trip to The Wilds a couple weeks ago.  One of the reasons a lot of the area looks so barren is that trees cannot grow here.  The land was previously strip mined for coal, and in the reclaimed areas such as this, the fertile topsoil only goes down about 12 inches - any trees that are planted either die or are severely stunted.  Estimates range into the hundreds of years before the land will be able to support full-sized native tree growth again.
